Record 21 pitchers used as Rays top Orioles in 18-inning marathon

Yahoo! Sports

Friday night was the wildest night of the 2013 baseball season to date. But nothing, and I do mean nothing, was crazier or more entertaining than the 18-innings marathon played at Tropicana Field.

The Tampa Bay Rays eventually escaped the mayhem with a 5-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles thanks to David DeJesus’ walk-off single, but not before an MLB record 21 pitchers were used. That broke the previous record of 20, which has occurred twice. The most recent was on Aug. 24 in when the Diamondbacks and Phillies played 19 innings.

Bobby Valentine: “Mets did more than Yankees following 9/11”

Memo to Bobby Valentine: Step away from the microphone. Seriously, please just stop talking. You can’t make this any better for yourself. It can only get worse.

What am I talking about?

Well, remember the comments former Mets manager Bobby Valentine made Wednesday — the 12-year anniversary of 9/11 — in which he wanted to make sure everyone knew the Mets did more to help the community than the Yankees in the aftermath?

Yeah, he’s digging in his heels.

Brian Wilson tells agent that his beard is ‘going with him to the grave’

Yahoo! Sports

No matter how much someone tries to pay pitcher Brian Wilson to shave his awful beard, he won’t do it. One day after a razor blade company offered him $1 million dollars to erase his infamous facial hair, Wilson’s agency told TMZ (because, yeah) that he never took the offer earnestly.

How close of a shave was it? Wilson’s Beard even released a statement:

“I DON’T CARE HOW MUCH MONEY’S ON THE TABLE … NOBODY’S CUTTING ME!”

He should let the Beard talk all of the time. And the way Wilson pitched in his return to Major League Baseball on Thursday, changing anything right now would seem a misstep — especially considering ballplayer superstitions.

Pete Rose: How can Ichiro catch my hits record?

Yankees outfielder Ichiro Suzuki collected his 4,000th professional hit on Wednesday night, broken down into 2,722 in MLB and 1,278 in Japan. While talking to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, all-time hit king Pete Rose essentially discounted Ichiro’s hits in Japan when discussing his record.

“He’s still 600 hits away from catching Derek Jeter,” said Rose to Nightengale, “so how can he catch me?”

Yasiel Puig unloads on the media

There’s no doubt that Puig has been a media fixation over the first 10 weeks of his major-league career, and the Cuban defector’s first trip to Miami has probably occasioned even more coverage. For a 22-year-old, it’s probably a bit overwhelming at times.
