Knowshon Moreno explains his tears after Broncos take control of AFC West from Chiefs

Yahoo! Sports

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – There was a reason that none of Knowshon Moreno’s Denver Broncos teammates came to check on his well-being as the star running back stood weeping on the sideline on Sunday afternoon.

They have seen it all before.

While Moreno’s flood of tears during the national anthem sparked a social media frenzy after being captured by a CBS cameraman before the Broncos’ crucial 35-28 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, it was no shock to his colleagues. It is a common occurrence in the Broncos’ camp, be it at practice, on the way to games or in the locker room.

The Super Bowl and Roman numerals: A match made in Kansas City

Yahoo! Sports

NEW ORLEANS – It is the most American of occasions, the showpiece of the most American of all sports, so why does the Super Bowl use Roman numerals to denote its grand event every year?

No other major American sport uses the Roman counting system, one formerly familiar to school kids around the country but now essentially obsolete to the iPad generation. Yet the Super Bowl persists with the tradition, has no desire or plan to change it, and the ancient characters will continue to appear just as they have since 1971.

That was the year when what was supposed to be Super Bowl 5 became Super Bowl V, at the insistence of pioneering sports entrepreneur Lamar Hunt, the owner of the Kansas City Chiefs and one of the most significant figures in the growth in the game’s popularity.

The Baltimore Colts emerged victorious that year, outlasting the Dallas Cowboys 16-13 thanks to a winning field goal in the dying seconds.

Roger Goodell talks Chiefs, eliminating kickoffs, and player safety with TIME magazine

Yahoo! Sports

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is on the cover of this week’s TIME Magazine, and Goodell has many interesting things to say in a wide-ranging story written by Sean Gregory. First and foremost, Goodell discussed the thought process that went into the decision to have the Kansas City Chiefs play the Carolina Panthers  at Arrowhead Stadium just one day after Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher killed his girlfriend, 22-year-old Kasandra Perkins, at the couple’s home, and then took his own life at the team’s facility.

“My first thoughts weren’t about football at all,” Goodell said, recalling when he heard the news last Saturday morning. “This is not a football tragedy. It’s a human tragedy that impacts families, loved ones and an innocent child left behind.”

Carolina Panthers wants fans’ help in ending winless coin-flip streak

Yahoo! Sports

The Carolina Panthers have lost eight of their games this season, but there isn’t much their fans can do to change that record. But the Panthers are hoping the fans can help with another losing record — the team is 0-12 in coin flips.

In 11 pregame and one overtime coin flips, the Panthers haven’t made the right call once. To change their luck, they want their fans’ help. The Panthers posted this question on their Facebook page:

“The Carolina Panthers are an astonishing 0-for-12 on coin tosses this season, so we want you – the fans – to call heads or tails for Sunday’s game vs. the Kansas City Chiefs.”

A poll is also posted on the Facebook page. As of this writing, the voting is deadlocked between heads and tails.

The new ‘Romeo Rule’: Chiefs will bench any player who turns the ball over

Yahoo! Sports

The effectiveness of their methodology is yet to be determined, but the Kansas City Chiefs are certainly moving around a lot in an attempt to change their fortunes after a 1-7 start and a minus-109 point differential, second-worst in the league behind the Jacksonville Jaguars. Head coach Romeo Crennel recently replaced himself as defensive coordinator with Gary Gibbs, the team cut starting cornerback Stanford Routt despite signing him to a multi-year deal this preseason, and there are rumors afoot that team owner Clark Hunt recently met with former Chiefs head coach Marty Schottenheimer for some unknown reason.
