Homeless man tells Lions receiver Nate Burleson ‘Man, you guys are sorry’ at charity event

Yahoo! Sports

Detroit Lions receiver Nate Burleson knows what it is like to be the butt of jokes.

Burleson is the guy who attempted to save a falling pizza while driving in September. As a result of that irrational move, Burleson crashed his car and broke an arm. He even received a year supply of free pizza from DiGiorno to avoid another accident.

Nevertheless, this might be a new low for Burleson and his team.

Matthew Stafford’s gutsy sneak fools everyone in Lions’ stunning win vs. Cowboys

Yahoo! Sports

DETROIT – The first order of business was getting Reilly Reiff back to the line of scrimmage.

“Reilly is out there [at midfield],” Matthew Stafford said of his Detroit Lions left tackle, shaking his head at the memory. “And he’s celebrating.”

“He’s [expletive] halfway down the field,” running back Reggie Bush said with a laugh.

Reiff thought Calvin Johnson had just scored a game-winning touchdown against the Dallas Cowboys. Only he hadn’t. Megatron went for 329 receiving yards in this game, but the refs ruled him one short on the most critical of plays.

So now it was the Lions’ ball, first-and-goal at the 1. The problem was Dallas led by six and the clock was ticking down and Ford Field was a surreal mix of chaos and screams, no one really sure what was going down.

Pat Summerall, former Giants kicker and giant in the broadcasting industry, dies at age 82

Yahoo! Sports

The brilliance of Pat Summerall was always what he didn’t say. He didn’t have to be the loudest or most verbose guy in the broadcast booth. But he was the best.

The Dallas Morning News reported that Summerall has died at the age of 82. The report said he died in the hospital where he was recovering from hip surgery.

Summerall was a former NFL player. He was most memorably a New York Giants kicker, playing in the legendary 1958 title game against the Colts, and before that he kicked for the Detroit Lions and Chicago Cardinals. He was a good kicker in the NFL. Then he became a great announcer. He was one of the NFL’s distinctive voices as the league grew by leaps and bounds. That might not be coincidental.

Mike McCarthy avoids Jim Schwartz’s fate in challenge flag snafu

Yahoo! Sports

A play in the pivotal Minnesota Vikings-Green Bay Packers game will end with football fans more confused about the NFL’s rules on coach challenges than they were before.

James Jones dove for the end zone. Just after he broke the plane of the end zone, Jones fumbled the ball. The Vikings recovered. The officials originally called it a fumble and Vikings ball.

Aaron Rodgers was incensed with this result, running to the sideline yelling. Packers coach Mike McCarthy threw the challenge flag, but receiver Jordy Nelson quickly ran over and picked the flag up and handed it back to his coach. Earlier this season, Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz and Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith both threw challenge flags on automatically reviewed plays — the result of which was that the plays were not reviewed and penalties were assessed.

There are a few major problems with the Detroit Lions’ 2013 calendar

Yahoo! Sports

In this Internet era, where everybody lives on blog time, we do have to pause to understand the concept of lead time. When you’re creating tangible things one can hold in one’s hands, it takes a bit longer to set things up. However, the company put in charge of creating the Detroit Lions’ 2013 calendar really got off on the wrong foot.

As you can see, the cover of the calendar features a picture of receiver Titus Young, who has been the primary resident in head coach Jim Schwartz’s doghouse this season. Young started his downhill slide when he sucker-punched safety Louis Delmas — his own teammate — in a May minicamp practice. In the team’s Week 11 loss to the Green Bay Packers, he was actually lining up in the wrong places and running the wrong routes … on purpose. Last week, center Dominic Raiola summed up his own feelings about Young very succinctly.
