Judging ‘controversy’ can’t steal Floyd Mayweather’s thunder in lopsided win over Canelo Alvarez

Yahoo! Sports

LAS VEGAS – Not everyone goes home from an evening in Vegas $8,000 in profit but Cynthia J. Ross did just that on Saturday night. And even though Ross, a ringside judge, pocketed approximately 5,000 times less than Floyd Mayweather, it is hard to argue that she deserved a cent of it.

While every pay-per-view customer around the world, every fan at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, both Mayweather and his opponent, Canelo Alvarez, and even the guy with the wonky eyesight squinting from the nosebleed section saw that this was one of the biggest blowouts in recent boxing history, a lady with one of the best seats in the house missed it.

Last week was almost like a victory tour for Mike Tyson, the former heavyweight champion. He appeared on Fox Sports 1 to talk about his upcoming six-part series on his life, and he staged his first boxing card as a promoter.

He appeared in great spirits and in command of a life that just four years ago, seemed in total disarray.

According to Tyson himself, however, his life is still in a bad place. On Friday, speaking to reporters, he was asked about a meeting with his former assistant trainer, Teddy Atlas. Tyson and Atlas, now an ESPN boxing analyst, have been enemies for years. Atlas was scheduled to call the fights on ESPN2 on Friday that Tyson was promoting.

Emile Griffith was one of the toughest guys in one of the toughest sports on Earth, a kind man who wasn’t so kind in the ring. He was one of the best fighters in an era loaded with elite fighters and, despite his induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990, was never given the credit he was due.

Rather, Griffith, who died Tuesday in New York at 75, will sadly best be remembered for killing rival Benny Paret in the ring during a nationally televised welterweight title fight at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Griffith and Paret had split their first two bouts, when they met on March 24, 1962 in a rubber match for Paret’s belt. Before the fight, Paret taunted Griffith, using a Spanish word that is slang for homosexual. That apparently enraged Griffith.

Adrien Broner backs up the talk and then talks more trash on Paulie Malignaggi

Yahoo! Sports

NEW YORK – Adrien Broner spent months talking about what he’d do to Paulie Malignaggi when they finally met in the ring. On Saturday, he got his chance and backed up his words with a superlative effort.

But it was after the fight that the real theatrics began. Broner made it clear that he wasn’t injured by Malignaggi, and then delivered another kind of blow.

“I’m good,” Broner said. “I lifted his belt and his girl.”
