Brazil U-17 team protest referee decisions in loss to U.S. by refusing to play

The U.S. U-17 team beat Brazil 4-1 to win the Nike International Friendlies tournament in Florida, but the match came to an undignified and premature end. Though it was only an informal competition organized by a shared sponsor, the match proved feisty with a few scuffles and two red cards for Brazil, which led to the two teams standing still at the end and prompting the ref to blow the final whistle before the 90th minute.

Mariano Rivera and Ray Lewis headlined the sports retirement class of 2013. Rivera had his classy farewell tour around the majors, and the amount of respect he had earned was perhaps best represented when Red Sox fans gave him a standing ovation at Fenway Park. Lewis earned a Hollywood ending by finishing his career with the Ravens’ win against the 49ers in the Super Bowl.
But they had plenty of company in calling it a career, including some teammates, with Andy Pettitte and Hideki Matsui for Rivera, and Matt Birk for Lewis

Stoke’s Asmir Begovic scores fastest goal ever by a goalkeeper

A mere 12 seconds into the match, Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic scored an improbable goal against Southampton that will likely put him in the record books. Begovic simply booted a backpass up the pitch and Southampton’s central defenders let it take a big bounce between them, which goalkeeper Artur Boruc wasn’t prepared for. The ball then arched over his head and bounced in for the goal (gif here if you have trouble with the video).

Pele got a bit misty-eyed while presenting a limited edition book about his career entitled “1283” — the record number of goals the now 72-year-old Brazilian legend scored over a career that included three World Cup titles. The book weighs a hefty 33 pounds and costs an even heftier $1,700 since just 1,283 copies have been printed. But if that’s too cheap for your tastes, there’s also a more expensive version available.

Turkish government slams scuffle after Beşiktaş-Galatasaray derby game

Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç has slammed the incidents which occurred at a Beşiktaş-Galatasaray game on Sept. 22 after dozens of supporters invaded the field at the jam-packed Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul during the injury time of the derby.
“Those incidents [referring to the scuffles erupted at yesterday’s game] were extremely upsetting and ugly,” Arınç said, when asked by reporters in Istanbul.
